Pope Francis Is Down With Public Breastfeeding, Sistine Chapel Included

During his homily at the Sistine Chapel to celebrate the Feast of the Baptism, Pope Francis encouraged mothers to feed their nursing babies during the service.

1. Breastfeeding in public does not always get a lot of love. In the past year alone mothers have been told to “sit in the corner” by a top U.K. government official, and regularly have photos pulled from Facebook and Instagram for indecency.

2. But Pope Francis is having none of that.

3. The Pope, speaking to worshipers this past Sunday, encouraged nursing mothers not to shy away from feeding their babies in the Sistine Chapel should the need arise.

4. “You mothers give your children milk and even now, if they cry because they are hungry, breastfeed them, don’t worry,” the Pontiff said.

While mothers certainly don’t need anyone’s permission to breastfeed, the encouragement of the Pope sets a standard for so many who devalue and degrade breastfeeding as a indecent act.

5. Keep up the love and acceptance, Pope Francis!
