People Want To Defund Planned Parenthood — But What Would That Actually Mean?

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve probably heard about or even taken part in the Planned Parenthood debate.

Planned Parenthood has been the subject of controversy and violent attacks since it first opened its doors in 1921. Today, Planned Parenthood is the largest provider of health services in the United States, but with that growth has come great resistance. The majority of the opposition likes to portray this organization as an abortion factory that’s dedicated to spending government money on aborting fetuses and gaining from those fetuses financially.

Nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, abortions are one of the services that Planned Parenthood performs least. On average, only three percent of their patients come in to terminate their pregnancies.

However, that hasn’t stopped misinformation from spreading. Just last year, they were accused of illegally selling fetal tissue, a claim that has been debunked over and over again. Still, it’s not uncommon to see signs like this at protests.

So, what does Planned Parenthood actually do with the $500 million they receive every year in government funding? Their number one service, making up over 42 percent of patients, is screening for STDs.

Screenings for cancer, diabetes, high blood pressure, anemia, and thyroid issues are provided as well.

They also provide services for people to quit smoking.

And beyond that, they help men and boys with a variety of issues, ranging from infertility to urinary tract infections to testicular cancer.

Perhaps most importantly, as their name suggests, Planned Parenthood helps women and men plan when (or if) they want to be parents. By making contraception readily available, they have not only kept abortions at a minimum, but enabled many children to be born to parents who are ready for them.

It’s also important to note that Title X funding doesn’t allow for abortions. Medicaid does, but only in very specific circumstances. When people talk about “defunding” planned parenthood, they wouldn’t actually be defunding abortions at all, but the many other services that American families rely on.

Out of the 10.6 million individuals that Planned Parenthood served in 2015, only 328,000 were seeking abortions.

That said, safe and legal abortions are imperative to women’s health. Three in 10 women have abortions before the age of 45, and when they don’t have access to abortion services, they turn to dangerous, deadly methods.

Since most of their funding comes in the form of Medicare and Title IX, Planned Parenthood serves some of the poorest communities in America. Without them, these individuals wouldn’t get the care they so desperately need.
