Ex-Romney aide Richard Grenell schools Harvey Fierstein on tolerance

Former Romney spokesman Richard Grenell knows a thing or two about liberal tolerance. After the Left falsely claimed bigoted conservatives forced Grenell out of his campaign gig because he’s gay, he said:

Some of the most hateful, mean-spirited intolerant comments about me being the foreign policy and national security spokesman for Governor Romney … were coming from the left.

So when Grenell spotted actor Harvey Fierstein’s obnoxious tweet about Romney, he hit back.

Hollywood ignorance. @HarveyFierstein: Romney today said, "I AM WHAT I AM." does he think he's a drag queen from LA CAGE AUX FOLLES?

. @harveyfierstein Liberal intolerance is still disgusting.

I'm tolerant, as long as you think like me. @rdsanchezjr: #GOH8!–>> @HarveyFierstein Liberal intolerance is still disgusting.

Fierstein tried to play the oh-so-original “humorless conservative” card, but Grenell wasn’t having it.

@HarveyFierstein of course i know that…but tolerance means one is tolerant of viewpoints DIFFERENT than your's.

Shorter Harvey “Pee-wee” Fierstein: I know you are, but what am I?

@HarveyFierstein i'm tolerant of opposing views. i'm not wishing natural disaster harm on those who differ #GOPpissedSomeoneOff?

— Richard Grenell (@RichardGrenell) August 28, 2012

No one is wishing bad things on anyone. You really are a silly old thing. Take a deep breath. Stop looking for enemies. They're all in you.

— Harvey Fierstein (@HarveyFierstein) August 28, 2012

Wishing natural disaster harm on others? Uh oh. Did Fierstein pull an Ellen Barkin? Or maybe a Samuel L. Jackson?

Here’s what he tweeted on Sunday as Tropical Storm Isaac threatened the GOP convention in Tampa:

Pat Robertson says natural disasters are sent as punishment from on high. Guess the GOP pissed somebody off!

— Harvey Fierstein (@HarveyFierstein) August 27, 2012

Classy. And tolerant, natch. Those icky Republicans were totally asking for it when they bared a little too much conservative leg.

Fierstein’s “what goes around comes around” sense of “humor” shines a spotlight directly on his unwillingness to tolerate different ideas. As with the rest of the open-minded Left, tolerance isn’t actually a virtue. At best it’s a bumper sticker; more often than not, it’s a bludgeon used to beat back opposing views.
