Justin Bieber today urged his more than 37 million followers to get on board with Russell Simmons’ social media campaign to end the government’s war on drugs. Canadian Bieber’s signature was absent from the Def Jam co-founder’s open letter to President Obama, but his supportive tweet garnered nearly 10,000 retweets within a couple of hours.
.@JustinBieber just tweeted to #EndTheWarOnDrugs and within two minutes, it got 5000 RTs. Power to the people!

Sure, that’s an impressive number, but are Bieber’s fans showing some restraint in hitting the “retweet” button on this one? As Twitchy reported, Bieber’s declaration that “cereal is really good” was retweeted more than 56,000 times just hours after it was posted. Who says Bieber fans aren’t capable of independent thought?
If @justinbieber tells you to support a cause you support it #endthewarondrugs

actually halfway convinced that Justin Bieber can singlehandedly end the war on drugs with a single tweet
— naxuu (@naxuu) April 9, 2013
Among the many celebrities who did sign the letter were Jim Carrey, Jamie Foxx, Scarlett Johannson, Kim Kardashian, Cameron Diaz, LL Cool J, Eva Longoria, Chris Rock, Sarah Silverman, Susan Sarandon and Ron Howard. The letter includes a personal appeal to the president: “Your struggles as the child of a single mother allow you to identify with millions of children who long to be with their parents,” the letter reads.
Bieber might have picked up some new fans with his tweet.
