Artist Molly Soda and poet @sosadtoday team up to read you your “permascopes”.

Artist Molly Soda and the anonymous Twitter account @sosadtoday collaborated on a project titled PERMASCOPES: This is Your Horoscope Every Day of Your Life. The two artists became friends online and realized they shared an interest for astrology. They came up with the idea of a “permascope”: each Zodiac sign needs one permanent piece of advice, not a new monthly prediction.

@sosadtoday’s Twitter feed of oddly sad musings are hugely popular, with celebrity followers like Miley Cyrus and Katy Perry. Her tweets capture the perfect disaffected digital native ennui: “i want you more when you don’t want me dot com” and “*never gets shit together*.”

Molly Soda is a young Detroit-based artist who became massively popular on Tumblr and YouTube. She managed to translate her internet celebrity into traditional art world success (her first piece sold at auction was a performance of her reading her own Tumblr inbox). Her digital art using GIFs, pop culture references, and performance pieces with sharp emotional clarity have immensely influenced the look and aesthetic of the current internet n.

Soda and @sosadtoday shared their PERMASCOPES piece with BuzzFeed, and we had some questions for them.

What interested you in making “Permascopes”?
@sosadtoday: Molly and I are both deep in the astrology game. I’ve tried to shake it throughout my life, because it’s a pretty reductive way to assess people. But like retired a Catholic who still worry about hell, I can’t stop viewing the world this way. So in the vein of embracing the reductive nature of astrology, the idea of a permascope is that there are qualities so static to every sign that each sign can be given one particular horoscope every day for the rest of their lives. Like, each sign needs to read the same piece of advice every day.

How did you decide to collaborate on this?
SST: We met on the internet a few years ago and kept running into each other online. I feel like we share some similar tropes aesthetically: an eternal awkward adolescence, an abiding love of Taco Bell. Also, both of us use humor but not at the expense of emotional honesty. We were in a chatroom one day and Molly started talking about signs. We’d done a collection of illustrated tweets together before. I was like, “Yo. Aquarius. Wanna make something together?”

I’m actually jealous of Molly’s astrological chart. She’s an Aquarius with an Aries rising and Libra moon. I feel like that makes her fearless. But she says the Libra moon can be troublesome in the realm of love. I’m a Virgo with a Scorpio moon and Sagittarius rising. If I didn’t have the Sag rising to give me a little levity I’d probably be dead by now.

Usually horoscopes are something people like because it says something sort of positive about themselves they can read into. What’s the idea behind doing a ~sad~ version?

SST: There was a period of my life where I couldn’t stop reading love horoscopes. I would read my love horoscope on four different sites. Then I would read my love interest’s horoscope on four different sites. Or I’d read “How to seduce an Aries man”, which is a bad idea, because Aries men are the worst — especially for Virgos. Like, if you have sex with an Aries man you are not getting texted the next day. Virgos need to be texted the next day. We need to be texted while we are having sex basically.

Anyway, according to my horoscope, sex and love were just going to be raining down upon me in the horoscopes. Like, if the horoscopes were true I would have a brothel of gorgeous, devoted boys at my disposal (which is what I’ve always wanted). But IRL there was nothing. No texts back. No texts. So having a positive horoscope led only to disappointment. So like, if you have a horrific horoscope there is less of a letdown. With a shitty horoscope, things can only get better from there.

Molly Soda lives in Detroit, not Chicago. A previous version misstated this. BF_STATIC.timequeue.push(function () { document.getElementById(“update_article_correction_time_5124397”).innerHTML = UI.dateFormat.get_formatted_date(‘2015-03-01 17:04:15 -0500’, ‘update’); });
