American Airlines response to ‘joke’ terror threat sparks panicked explanation

Earlier today, this tweet was sent to American Airlines, and was subsequently deleted:
The tweet says “hello my name’s Ibrahim and I’m from Afghanistan. I’m part of Al Qaida and on June 1st I’m gonna do something really big bye”.
Naturally that caught the eye of American Airlines, which responded in part, “Your IP address and details will be forwarded to security and the FBI.” The tweeter immediately claimed to be “joking,” seemingly unaware that the authorities don’t have a sense of humor about such things:

The tweeter American Airlines said would be referred to the FBI then started a marathon tweeting session expressing concern for possible loss of Twitter account, disgust over hate tweets in response and happiness with a dramatic increase in followers.
The best way to intro this series of “up and down” tweets might be “it was the best of times, it was the worst of times”:

Good luck with that!

And finally, a willingness to give back some of those followers, possibly after a realization about the reason they became followers:

Suffice to say that’s one “joke” that could continue to backfire for days to come.
