Class (size) warfare: Conservatives hijack #ClassSizeMatters hashtag

At a campaign stop in Nevada today, President Barack Obama again went on record quoting Mitt Romney as saying that “class sizes don’t matter” — a claim Twitchy recently debunked in an investigation of a new Obama campaign ad.

BUSTED: Obama caught lying about Romney position on classroom size http://t.co/yJEJ9rzQ

Despite nearly $100 billion of stimulus money allocated to schools under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, with more than half tagged to prevent layoffs and staff cutbacks, public school classrooms are still packed, and the administration wants to hear the stories.

Conservatives are using the #ClassSizeMatters hashtag to tell another story, however.

#ClassSizeMatters because we need a higher union teacher/administrator ratio to lock in Obama for another term.

#ClassSizeMatters Teacher unions are one of the reasons our public education system is not competitive with the rest of the world.

The source of the Obama campaign’s claim, as cited in its ad, is Romney’s comparison of class sizes in the United States to those of other higher-performing countries. “So it’s not the classroom size that’s driving the success of those school systems,” Romney noted, echoing the comments of the Obama administration’s own Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, who observed that “many high-performing education systems, especially in Asia, have substantially larger classes than the United States.”

Data: teacher quality more important than class size. “@BarackObama: #ClassSizeMatters why our kids need more teachers in the classroom.”

— Jakub Petrina (@jakubpetrina) August 22, 2012

While smaller classes remain the ideal for teachers and parents alike, some would prefer to see more choice in the matter, along with merit-based promotions and a renewed focus on curriculum.

#ClassSizeMatters but not as much as vouchers for real parental choice. Obama gets best for his kids, why not you?

— Brad Cundiff (@bradcundiff) August 22, 2012

Libs trying to make people think they care about "the kids" with #classsizematters. If they truly did, they would support school choice.

— Billy Pearse (@therealbillp) August 22, 2012

@therealbillp I still haven't forgotten the faces of the children & parents in DC being denied their vouchers when Obama b/c Pres.

#ClassSizeMatters but school choice matters more. Liberals and teacher unions fight against it, hurting kids in poor communities most.

— Casey Kim (@caseykim12) August 22, 2012

#ClassSizeMatters to teacher's union bosses, #SchoolChoice matters to parents and students.

— Les Hughs (@LesHughs) August 22, 2012

#ClassSizeMatters but so does accountability! Pay and layoffs should go by performance, not seniority!

#classsizematters but curriculum & teacher matters more.Go back 2 basics like reading writing math over teaching 1st graders 2 masturbate

— Incognito (@incognito912) August 22, 2012

#ClassSizeMatters this is a loaded question. All research points to quality teachers not class size as the most important factor

— william j silva jr (@mrwsilva) August 22, 2012

#ClassSizeMatters and so does curriculum!!! So why are you taking time to teach kids about environmentalism when they can't pass BASIC MATH?

— Christine Korenthal (@LiberTEA_Lover) August 22, 2012

As long as we’re getting back to basic math, isn’t there something else we’re overlooking?

Yes, #ClassSizeMatters. Also, #DeficitSizeMatters. #p2 #tcot
