Debbie Wasserman Schultz ‘disgusted’ by GOP’s politicizing of Newtown

No, that’s not a typo in the headline. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, chair of the Democratic National Committee, is disgusted that the Republicans would stoop so low as to use a photo of a Newtown parent in a political context. Just maybe it’s the context that has her upset; the photo appears briefly in an RNC video enumerating the setbacks dealt to President Obama in the first 100 days of his second term. Here’s the video:

Brad Woodhouse, the Democrats’ communications director, also found the video in poor taste, but his counterpart in the RNC suggests he take it up with ABC News, which put together the original clip. Further proof that ABC is just another Republican mouthpiece, right?

The Huffington Post’s Sam Stein raised the red flag.

The RNC, less worried abt politics of guns, uses shot of O consoling Newtown mom to push ineffective 2nd term theme bit.ly/160mFkK

@samsteinhp actually RNC used @abcnews package youtu.be/AlR17_M_97Q — but good try defending the Dems

— Sean Spicer (@seanspicer) May 1, 2013

@seanspicer so you’re saying abc put together the video that the rnc released? i’m a bit lost.

— Sam Stein (@samsteinhp) May 1, 2013

@seanspicer ahh. i see. ABC used it in their coverage of Obama’s defeats. ok, moving on

— Sam Stein (@samsteinhp) May 1, 2013

.@seanspicer you’re really digging a hole for yourself here, it was an RNC video, you didn’t have to include that clip. Admit you were wrong

— Brad Woodhouse (@woodhouseb) May 1, 2013

Wasserman Schultz isn’t the only disgusted, but not for the same reason.

@dwstweets But it’s ok to parade the victims’ familes around to push legislation? Now THAT is disgusting and exploitation at its finest.

Ummmm. RT @dwstweets: Disgusted that the @gop is using images of a Newtown victim’s parent to talk about political “defeat.” #Shameful

Disgusted that @dwstweets shares my gender and pushes the idea that women are weak and helpless #Shameful

MT @dwstweets: Disgusted that the @gop is using images of a Newtown victim’s parent // Why? Is Barack not finished exploiting them?

Now please, everyone, leave the families alone and stop politicizing Newtown once and for all … right after this tweet.

90% of Americans support background checks. The victims of Newtown and every town are far from “defeated.” (cc @gop) #NowIsTheTime
