Tidy Cat, the makers of cat litter, put up this billboard near a Cincinnati neighborhood called Over-the-Rhine:

how to lose customers @tidycats #OTR #takethesigndown #lifest... on Twitpic

The billboard received lots of criticism on Twitter:

I can't believe that @TidyCats is dissing Over-the-Rhine in their latest ad campaign. #tidycatsstinks

Cincinnati.com has background:

Tidy Cats has an ad campaign, called NoMorePU, to sell the deodorizing wonders of its cat litter. It placed a large billboard about a mile north of Over-the-Rhine, saying: “You’re so over Over-the-Rhine. Life stinks.”

People who live in, work in or just appreciate Over-the Rhine were not amused, so this weekend they went to Twitter, Facebook and the Tidy Cats website to raise a stink about the campaign.

The company spent much of the past few days apologizing  to individual Twitter users. A small sampling of Tidy Cat’s apology Tweets:

@shawnbaker We're sorry. We'll be taking swift action to correct our error. Please accept our apologies. -Tidy Cats Team
