.@timkaine on @MittRomney's 47% comment "the last thing we need to do is divide people." #VASEN #FFXDebate

— Brandi Hoffine (@brandihoffine) September 20, 2012

Divide? Not if Tim Kaine has anything to say about it. The former Virginia governor and current U.S. Senate candidate, debating opponent George Allen, called for eliminating the divide by instituting a minimum income tax on the 47 percent of Americans who currently don’t pay federal income taxes. Needless to say, this won’t exactly up Kaine’s popularity with Democratic voters, who have spent the past several days bristling at Mitt Romney’s “47 percent” remarks.

Conservatives and liberals alike couldn’t quite believe their ears:

Wait, what? RT @BenjySarlin: Tim Kaine just said he was open to a minimum income tax for the 47%. That's unexpected.

If Tim Kaine is open to a minimum income tax on 47% of non-income tax payers, I'm thinking VA isn't as in the bag for Obama as some think.

Derp. RT @LisaDCNN: TIM KAINE NOW: I would be open to a proposal that had a minimum federal tax for everyone. #VASenate

— David Freddoso (@freddoso) September 20, 2012

What did Tim Kaine just say he was open to? A minimum federal income tax on everyone?

— Sam Youngman (@samyoungman) September 20, 2012

Ummmmmm …. RT @mattyglesias: Tim Kaine "open to a proposal" to create a minimum income tax obligation, for some reason.

— Chelsey (@ChelseyWithAWhy) September 20, 2012

WTF??? @chrisdonovannbc: Tim Kaine tells @davidgregory he'd be open to all Americans … paying some minimum level of federal income tax

— David Scott (@dscottsf) September 20, 2012

+1 RT @mattklewis: I will resist the conceit of predicting "Tim Kaine just lost the race." But this gives Allen a huge cudgel.

— Philip Klein (@philipaklein) September 20, 2012

newsies are salivating over what Tim Kaine just said about minimum tax; does this guy know when to shut his mouth and enjoy the ride? NO

— Kecko (@1kecko) September 20, 2012

3 questions in debate so far. Tim Kaine has called for tax increases in all 3 questions. #VASen

Looks like Tim Kaine just hosed his campaign, at least short term. If it convinces other Dems to stay away will be worth it

— alexwhalen (@alexwhalen) September 20, 2012

Tim Kaine, taxer of the poor.

— Jim Antle (@jimantle) September 20, 2012

Somewhere, Creigh Deeds is looking at a television screen and happily muttering "Tim Kaine, you *idiot*."

— Moe Lane (@moelane) September 20, 2012

Looks like Tim Kaine just lost Virginia. Not surprised at all.

If there were such a thing as verbal seppuku, Kaine would make a fantastic poster child.

It’s not as if Kaine ever had the support of Republican voters. But after today, he may have lost the Democrats as well. Whoopsie!
