At the Pittsburgh Zoo, animals are used to being stared at. After all, it comes with the territory. But every now and then, something bizarre happens that makes them freak out a little bit. Whether it’s a backfiring car or an overzealous visitor, some things just send our animal friends over the edge.

For this ostrich, the resulting meltdown caused it to run headlong into the freezing stream that goes through its habitat. The poor thing needed help, so this zookeeper took the polar plunge.

It became clear pretty quickly that their lousy metal rod wasn’t going to do anything, so it’s probably good that this zookeeper wasn’t above diving in. I have a feeling that this ostrich won’t be going for a swim again anytime soon.
