Huh? Cosmo editor hates ‘sexist’ CRNC ad, but this is OK? [video, screenshots]
http://twitter.com/#!/AndrewHClark/status/517726070242832384
So, Cosmopolitan totes agrees with criticism of the CRNC’s “Say Yes to the Vote” ad campaign as totally “stupid,” “sexist,” “patronizing,” and “demeaning” and stuff:
This is hands down the most condescending political ad you will ever see: http://t.co/tOCeycRzmj pic.twitter.com/Gi8948e9tr
— Cosmopolitan (@Cosmopolitan) October 1, 2014
But this gets Cosmo’s stamp of approval:
( function() {
var func = function() {
var iframe_form = document.getElementById(‘wpcom-iframe-form-d4bedb979237f1fc7f54777ca7b7de82-542dae9e03a3a’);
var iframe = document.getElementById(‘wpcom-iframe-d4bedb979237f1fc7f54777ca7b7de82-542dae9e03a3a’);
if ( iframe_form && iframe ) {
iframe_form.submit();
iframe.onload = function() {
iframe.contentWindow.postMessage( {
‘msg_type’: ‘poll_size’,
‘frame_id’: ‘wpcom-iframe-d4bedb979237f1fc7f54777ca7b7de82-542dae9e03a3a’
}, window.location.protocol + ‘//wpcomwidgets.com’ );
}
}
// Autosize iframe
var funcSizeResponse = function( e ) {
var origin = document.createElement( ‘a’ );
origin.href = e.origin;
// Verify message origin
if ( ‘wpcomwidgets.com’ !== origin.host )
return;
// Verify message is in a format we expect
if ( ‘object’ !== typeof e.data || undefined === e.data.msg_type )
return;
switch ( e.data.msg_type ) {
case ‘poll_size:response’:
var iframe = document.getElementById( e.data._request.frame_id );
if ( iframe && ” === iframe.width )
iframe.width = ‘100%’;
if ( iframe && ” === iframe.height )
iframe.height = parseInt( e.data.height );
return;
default:
return;
}
}
if ( ‘function’ === typeof window.addEventListener ) {
window.addEventListener( ‘message’, funcSizeResponse, false );
} else if ( ‘function’ === typeof window.attachEvent ) {
window.attachEvent( ‘onmessage’, funcSizeResponse );
}
}
if (document.readyState === ‘complete’) { func.apply(); /* compat for infinite scroll */ }
else if ( document.addEventListener ) { document.addEventListener( ‘DOMContentLoaded’, func, false ); }
else if ( document.attachEvent ) { document.attachEvent( ‘onreadystatechange’, func ); }
} )();
How does that work, exactly?
@CRNC – #CosmoVotes thinks "makeup tutorial" ad is hilarious but "dress shopping" ad is condescending?? #BiasedMedia pic.twitter.com/ocMno81XnM
— Mollie R. Young (@MollieRiester) October 2, 2014
#CosmoVotes please tell me why a "Makeup Tutorial" ad is HILARIOUS, but a "Dress Shopping" ad is CONDESCENDING ?!? pic.twitter.com/XLcIX2NYcs
— Mollie R. Young (@MollieRiester) October 2, 2014
.@JillFilipovic – Hilarious vs. Condescending, seriously Jill? What is the difference here? @Cosmopolitan #CosmoVotes pic.twitter.com/CYMmk0ie5W
— Mollie R. Young (@MollieRiester) October 2, 2014
Let’s give Cosmo’s senior political writer Jill Filipovic a chance to explain:
@MollieRiester @Cosmopolitan Well, the difference is that one is hilarious and one is condescending.
— Jill Filipovic (@JillFilipovic) October 2, 2014
Oh, snap. She sure showed us!
@JillFilipovic @Cosmopolitan …and why exactly is that? BOTH seem to be playing off of a "girly" activity while talking politics.
— Mollie R. Young (@MollieRiester) October 2, 2014
Please, Jill. Do go on!
@MollieRiester @Cosmopolitan Have you watched the make-up tutorial? And the CRNC video? They are very, very different.
— Jill Filipovic (@JillFilipovic) October 2, 2014
@MollieRiester @Cosmopolitan One is a really dumb, bad parroting of a TLC show. The other is a satirical take on makeup tutorials.
— Jill Filipovic (@JillFilipovic) October 2, 2014
@MollieRiester @Cosmopolitan If you really cannot see how they are different, I don't really know what you tell you, but good luck in life.
— Jill Filipovic (@JillFilipovic) October 2, 2014
@JillFilipovic @Cosmopolitan Would you mind providing a little more context for your argument? You are just reiterating your headline.
— Mollie R. Young (@MollieRiester) October 2, 2014
@JillFilipovic @Cosmopolitan: "they're different because I say they're different"…?
— Mollie R. Young (@MollieRiester) October 2, 2014
@MollieRiester @Cosmopolitan One of them you're laughing along with because it's meant to be funny. The other you're laughing at.
— Jill Filipovic (@JillFilipovic) October 2, 2014
@JillFilipovic @Cosmopolitan I think both are funny. Both are satirical takes on a Television show or a YouTube video. No difference.
— Mollie R. Young (@MollieRiester) October 2, 2014
@MollieRiester @Cosmopolitan I think it's a stretch to consider the CRNC "satire." But congrats on thinking it was good! You're the only one
— Jill Filipovic (@JillFilipovic) October 2, 2014
@JillFilipovic Yes—because you hate conservative women and love liberal women. That's the difference. @MollieRiester @Cosmopolitan
— Lyndsey Fifield (@lyndseyfifield) October 2, 2014
@lyndseyfifield @MollieRiester @Cosmopolitan Mmmmm no. The difference is one is actually humorous. The other is only mockable.
— Jill Filipovic (@JillFilipovic) October 2, 2014
.@JillFilipovic @MollieRiester Both are engaging parodies, both are funny. Difference is that your side enforces the #DoubleStandard
— Andrew Clark (@AndrewHClark) October 2, 2014
@AndrewHClark @MollieRiester You know that video is being mocked ALL OVER the internet, right? "It's bad" is not just my subjective opinion.
— Jill Filipovic (@JillFilipovic) October 2, 2014
@MollieRiester @Cosmopolitan Can you explain what exactly the CRNC video is "satirizing"?
— Jill Filipovic (@JillFilipovic) October 2, 2014
@JillFilipovic @Cosmopolitan Oh, I can do that as soon as you give me an answer better than "they're very, very different".
— Mollie R. Young (@MollieRiester) October 2, 2014
@MollieRiester @Cosmopolitan I've given you several answers & I'm not sure why you feel a need to DEMAND ANSWERS!!!! on twitter. It's weird.
— Jill Filipovic (@JillFilipovic) October 2, 2014
Don’t see where Cosmo, which peddles in “LOVE” “CELEBS” “STYLE”, finds audacity to declare @CRNC ad condescending to women. @JillFilipovic
— Andrew Clark (@AndrewHClark) October 2, 2014
@AndrewHClark We find the audacity because we write about women — a group you clearly have an issue with. But that's your problem, not mine
— Jill Filipovic (@JillFilipovic) October 2, 2014
Cosmo writes about women via similar topics @CRNC ad is focused on. So are you both sexist? Or just them? @JillFilipovic
— Andrew Clark (@AndrewHClark) October 2, 2014
@AndrewHClark @CRNC Haha ok I can't, I'm sorry, this is so ridiculous. Also: This is why you have issues with female voters.
— Jill Filipovic (@JillFilipovic) October 2, 2014
@MollieRiester @Cosmopolitan What "fact" is being checked?
— Jill Filipovic (@JillFilipovic) October 2, 2014
@JillFilipovic @Cosmopolitan That you state they are "very, very different". They are not & you have not been able to prove that they are.
— Mollie R. Young (@MollieRiester) October 2, 2014
@MollieRiester @Cosmopolitan Dude. They are two different videos featuring different people & different topics. Hence: "They're different."
— Jill Filipovic (@JillFilipovic) October 2, 2014
@JillFilipovic @Cosmopolitan Why not just feature both video and ask – "what do you think?"
— Mollie R. Young (@MollieRiester) October 2, 2014
@MollieRiester Because we don't feature random campaign videos and ask "what do you think?" We featured that one bc it was newsworthy.
— Jill Filipovic (@JillFilipovic) October 2, 2014
@MollieRiester And it was newsworthy because it was so shockingly, hilariously terrible. A thing lots of media outlets concluded.
— Jill Filipovic (@JillFilipovic) October 2, 2014
@JillFilipovic I would hope @Cosmopolitan would produce more original content than just what "lots of media outlets concluded" #FreeThinking
— Mollie R. Young (@MollieRiester) October 2, 2014
By @JillFilipovic’s logic, no woman would ever click on this because its incredibly offensive to women @Cosmopolitan pic.twitter.com/cfIIONhy97
— Andrew Clark (@AndrewHClark) October 2, 2014
@AndrewHClark Can't figure out whether you're being intentionally obtuse or just don't understand what "condescending" and "logic" mean.
— Jill Filipovic (@JillFilipovic) October 2, 2014
But enough about you, Jill.
@AndrewHClark Anyway, as fun as this has been, I need to do actual work and not fight with weird rando bros on Twitter. Goodbye!
— Jill Filipovic (@JillFilipovic) October 2, 2014
@MollieRiester @Cosmopolitan Wow good argument. Ok it's been fun, I hope you find a new hobbyhorse soon!
— Jill Filipovic (@JillFilipovic) October 2, 2014
.@JillFilipovic @Cosmopolitan Wait a minute! Isn't #CosmoVotes about getting women involved in politics & I'm to find a new "hobbyhorse"?!
— Mollie R. Young (@MollieRiester) October 2, 2014
.@JillFilipovic blocked me from retweeting her, but wanted to make sure you all saw this #CosmoVotes @Cosmopolitan pic.twitter.com/Zoc94zzxFg
— Mollie R. Young (@MollieRiester) October 2, 2014
Cosmo wants women in politics. Just not conservatives. Or @NRCC’s @MollieRiester. #CosmoVotes pic.twitter.com/XZvsN6QFtw
— Andrew Clark (@AndrewHClark) October 2, 2014
Filipovic may have flown the coop — in an über-classy, feminist way, of course — but we’re not quite finished yet:
Just calling out the insane double standard that your side employs. Cosmo is quite guilty. @JillFilipovic
— Andrew Clark (@AndrewHClark) October 2, 2014
Extremely so. As evidenced by these gems, which can be found at cosmopolitan.com:
What is this? @JillFilipovic @CRNC @Cosmopolitan pic.twitter.com/kHEaaZZEeT
— Andrew Clark (@AndrewHClark) October 2, 2014
How empowering!
