Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s assault weapon ban might be on life support, thanks to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, but the White House isn’t giving up hope yet. Chief of staff Denis McDonough told CNN’s Jake Tapper today that the White House would “find the votes” to pass the ban, which could still survive as an amendment to the Democrats’ gun control package headed for the Senate floor.

McDonough repeated the president’s line that the sweeping ban of more than 150 models of firearms and magazines “deserves a vote,” but most aren’t holding their breath for an estimated 20 additional votes to materialize.

The White House can count on a vote from New Jersey, as Sen. Bob Menendez reaffirmed his support of Feinstein’s gun grab. Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-N.J.) has promised to add his magazine ban as an amendment.
Extremely disappointed @senfeinstein #AssaultWeaponsBan is reportedly not included in the gun safety reform bill going to the #Senate floor.

It was wrong to let #AssaultWeaponsBan expire in ’04 & it’s wrong to sweep it under rug now. Military-style weapons don’t belong on streets.
