This former rock quarry is known to locals as the Blue Lagoon. The water is crystal clear and from a distance, strikingly blue. But don’t let its looks fool you. Because of the contents of the lake, the water in the Blue Lagoon is actually not pleasant at all. In fact, it’s as toxic as bleach… but it’s still one of the most popular tourist destinations of the area.
The water contains car wrecks, dead animals, excrement and trash.
The quarry’s pH is pH 11.3, just less than ammonia at 11.5pH and bleach at 12.6pH.
The most shocking part? Families still insist on swimming in it.

There is even visible trash piled up as well. But that doesn’t stop people from going in.
Families flock to this lake in Buxton, Derbyshire, to swim even with the warnings.
They believe that if they don’t go in deeper than their neck, they will be okay.
However, they are basically swimming in poison.
The bright water is caused by the surrounding limestone rocks which leach calcite crystals into the water, turning it turquoise.
Residents have even appealed to a local council with a 760-name petition, calling for action to stop people from visiting the site. However, because it’s privately owned, the government can’t interfere.
Locals have even tried to get the site drained, but the water board will not drain it because the water is so toxic.
People have even seen mothers taking their infants into the water to swim, ignoring the numerous signs posted in the area. It seems they have a death wish for themselves and those they love.
