In an exclusive phone interview this morning, GOP candidate Mitt Romney condemned Rep. Todd Akin’s remarks about “legitimate rape” and pregnancy. Romney’s campaign also released a statement last night.

“Congressman’s Akin comments on rape are insulting, inexcusable, and, frankly, wrong,” Romney said. “Like millions of other Americans, we found them to be offensive.”

Yesterday Akin issued a statement saying he misspoke and tweeted that he does indeed “understand that rape can result in pregnancy.”
For the Left, Romney’s strong condemnation doesn’t go far enough, natch.

I can't believe Mitt Romney is getting credit for standing up against Akin. This was a gimme. Plus last night statement about it was weak.

And of course, progressives are still working overtime to use Akin’s remark to smear Romney and running mate Paul Ryan.
Media needs to ask Romney about Paul Ryan's definition of "forcible rape" which is the same as Todd Akin. #p2

# We know that Ryan backed Todd Akin's bill no abortion in rape and incest .Ryan is a fool and so is Romney .Vote out GOP

@BarbaraComstock You are a disgrace to women for supporting an Akin's/Ryan/Romney ticket and you are a Liar and stop advising candidates

The Left will willfully ignore that many Republicans believe that Akin’s “legitimate rape” remark was stupid and cringe-worthy — that doesn’t further the liberal agenda. Why acknowledge the truth when you can amplify one dumb statement to broad-brush the entire conservative movement?
