Face it: posting a photo of your pet to social media isn’t exactly groundbreaking. Twitter users today, though, have started the #TweetAPicOfYourDog hashtag for a special reason: to honor reservist (and dog lover) Nathan Cirillo, who was murdered Wednesday in a terrorist attack while guarding Canada’s National War Memorial. As Twitchy reported, an utterly heartbreaking photo of Cirillo’s dogs waiting for their master to return home is bringing tears to the eyes of more than a few.

Here are just a few photos tweeted in Cirillo’s memory by fellow dog lovers.

Rest in peace Cpl. Cirillo.
