It’s believed that the breed originated either on Foula or the neighboring Shetland Islands, hence the name.

In any case, there’s evidence that Shetland ponies have been living on Foula Island since the Bronze Age, which began around 2,300 B.C.E.

There are very few places in the world where you can see wild Shetland ponies running free like this! And seriously, how cute are they?
