Nancy Pelosi: GOP’s ‘anti-nutrition bill’ rejects science, hurts children

The House Appropriations Committee voted 31–18 Thursday on a bill that would allow schools to opt out of White House nutritional guidelines passed in 2012. Those guidelines have inspired high school students to shoot a “We Are Hungry” music video and post photos of their paltry school lunches to Twitter.
The New York Times reports that the School Nutrition Association praised the legislation, acknowledging that the cost of the new rules has led to fewer schools participating in the federal meals programs. Not only that; the rules have also led to “tons of wasted food because children are not eating the healthier alternatives.”
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi spun the wheel of blame and determined that the GOP’s plan in this case is “anti-science” and “anti-nutrition.” And of course, women and children would be hardest hit.
